Meet Mrs. Szukhent
Hi! My name is Mrs. Luann Szukhent (pronounced Sue-Kent). The past two years have been difficult for everyone. But maybe no one has been affected more than young children and their education. Teaching young children requires consistency, let me help you. Children need to breathe fresh air in order to learn, let me help you. Children need to see clearly the face and mouth of their teacher, let me help you. A child's education should be based in truth, let me help you. Let me help you give your child a Christian education in a safe, non-mandated environment.
My husband and I have been married 32 years. We have two children, one son-in-law, and four grandchildren! It is true what they say - Grandchildren are a lot of fun!! We have had some great opportunities to travel around the United States and see more of this amazing country. We visited Gettysburg with Abe Lincoln, saw the Redwoods in California, gazed at the Grand Canyon, peeked into some cliff dwellings in Arizona, and held gators in Florida! We love looking for new adventures!
From September 1997 to May 2015 we home schooled our two children. I am so thankful we had the freedom to educate our children as we felt God was leading us! I enjoyed spending time learning with my children. We had many adventures and a lot of fun. From building our own chicken egg incubator, candling eggs, watching a ceropia moth emerge after overwintering, laying out on the driveway at 1am to gaze at the Perseid Meteor Shower, touring Washington DC with Rudy Giuliani's nephew as our tour guide, and on - learning can happen everywhere!
When my daughter married, I knew the empty nest was coming. So, I went back to college to get my teaching degree. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Baker College in June 2015. (When you home school, eventually you run out of students!) I worked one year at Montrose Elementary school as a Reading Interventionist. I worked with elementary students struggling to read. I used Fountas and Pinnell phonics based learning system. I saw great growth in student's reading abilities. I was then hired by Stride/K12 for a new Michigan virtual school, Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. For the past six years I taught 2nd grade students from all over Michigan virtually. I definitely learned a lot about the virtual world! I truly believe every school is not for every student. There were certainly many successes for students with involved parents as learning coaches in this learning environment however, some students were not able to thrive in the online world.
As I see the current climate in education - students struggling to learn, parents trying to find the best plan for their children, special interest groups pushing their agenda - my heart is to help families at a local level by offering an education based in truth with no mandates! Together, we can support your child's achievements, challenge him or her, expand the kinds of learning he or she will be offered, and celebrate each success. I love sharing my passion of learning! ~ Mrs. Szukhent
